The Gortzes wanted a historic home of their own and found it in the community added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1999.

"Lafayette Residence Park has the Ghent vibe with more affordable houses," said Amy , 34.

The couple's 1,700-square-foot home, built in the 1930s, was going to be their long-term dream, but plans have changed as Kenneth's job may move the couple of state.

The Gortzes are among other young couples who have bought and fixed up homes in this compact suburban neighborhood north of downtown Norfolk .

"It's an up-and-coming area . People take pride in this neighborhood," said Amy Gortz, who hopes to find the same type of charming home in North Carolina or Rhode Island should they be transferred.

Lafayette Residence Park emerged as a suburban community during the first quarter of the 20th century. Several hundred historic properties make up the neighborhood, which features gently winding streets guided by the Lafayette River's shoreline .

Featuring tree-lined streets and sidewalks, the community is bisected by Lafayette Boulevard and is connected to the downtown area via the 26th Street Bridge.

At the turn of the century, the Norfolk Railway and Light Company's Ocean View streetcar line ran down the center of the boulevard and provided residents with modern transportation to city points for a 5-cent fare.

Several other suburban communities, including Park Place, Riverview, Colonial Place and Larchmont, were developing while Lafayette Residence Park was planned and promoted.
